Our Name

Bloor Media Group is named after the intersection of Bloor street and Bathurst street in the Annex, Toronto, Canada.

The company is dedicated to the spirit of Ed Mirvish, a competent business man, philanthropist and member of the community. Ed Mirvish greatly enriched the lives of those around him.

Quoting on a comments made by Toronto’s Mayor, David Miller:

“One of the things that made him so special and so endearing is that despite being a successful and savvy businessman, his motives were always about more than the bottom line. His philosophy was to keep prices reasonable so everyone could afford to shop at his store. And he always gave back to the community through his turkey giveaway and his annual birthday block party. His foresight also gave birth to the Entertainment Disctrict and helped revitalize the city’s live theatre industry bringing with it thousands of jobs and busloads of tourists flocking to see the latest great production. The lights may have dimmed on Ed’s life, but his sprit and legacy have been indelibly burned into the fabric of Toronto. … He will be missed but never, ever forgotten.”

The founder, Alwin Tong, after having lived in 7 cities, named the company after his spiritual home: the apartment used while a student, on Bloor, across the street from Honest Ed’s department store.

The intersection at Bathurst and Bloor is a richly flowing and diverse area where one can find “100 opinions” by just standing at the street corner, and is in large part due to people like Ed Mirvish.
